# Sign-in and password rules

> Reference for how long a sign-in code and a password link stay valid, what a password must contain, and the links on the sign-in page.

This page lists the rules, the links, and the messages of the sign-in page.

## Codes and links

| Subject                       | Rule                                                                                                                                                                                               |
| ----------------------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Sign-in code                  | 6 digits. The code expires 1 hour after the product sends it.                                                                                                                                      |
| New sign-in code              | The page where you type the code has no control that sends the code again. Select **Use a different email** and start again.                                                                       |
| Page after Send code          | The page where you type the code shows for each email that you type, for an email with an account and for an email with no account. The product sends a code only to an email that has an account. |
| Password link                 | The link expires about 1 hour after the product sends it.                                                                                                                                          |
| Code after you set a password | You can still sign in with a sign-in code after you set a password.                                                                                                                                |
| Single sign-on                | If your organization uses single sign-on, the sign-in page tells you to sign in through your identity provider.                                                                                    |

## Password requirements

| Subject             | Requirement                                                            |
| ------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Password length     | 12 characters or more.                                                 |
| Password characters | 1 uppercase letter, 1 lowercase letter, and 1 number, or more of each. |

The **Choose a password** page states the requirements: _Use at least 12 characters, with 1 uppercase letter, 1 lowercase letter, and 1 number._

The product has no password setting in **Settings** or **Account**. A password is set and reset only from the sign-in page.

## Links on the sign-in page

| Link                                     | What it does                                                                                         |
| ---------------------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Use a different email**                | Loads the sign-in page again with an empty form.                                                     |
| **Sign in with a password instead**      | Shows the email and password form.                                                                   |
| **Set or reset password**                | Shows the form that emails you a link to choose a password.                                          |
| **Sign in with a one-time code instead** | Returns to the form that sends a sign-in code.                                                       |
| **Sign in with a one-time code**         | Returns to the form that sends a sign-in code. This link is on the form that emails a password link. |

## Messages

| Message                                                                                  | When it shows                                            |
| ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | -------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Email is required.**                                                                   | You did not type an email.                               |
| **Password is required.**                                                                | You did not type a password.                             |
| **Password must be at least 12 characters.**                                             | The new password is too short.                           |
| **Password must contain at least 1 uppercase letter, 1 lowercase letter, and 1 number.** | The new password does not have each kind of character.   |
| **Passwords do not match.**                                                              | **New password** and **Confirm password** are different. |
| **Your password link expired. Request a new one to continue.**                           | You opened a password link after it expired.             |
| **Your session expired. Request a new password link.**                                   | Your session ended before you saved the password.        |
