# Add a data patch

> How an Admin lays a Google Sheet of extra rows over a connected channel in Data Center, tests the sheet, and removes the patch.

To add a data patch, open the menu of a connected channel on the **Channels** tab, select **Data patch**, give a Google Sheet and a named range, then select **Save & Test**. Use a data patch to add rows that the connection does not have, for example ad spend from before the account was connected.

You must be an Admin. For what a patch is and which channels can take one, see [Data patches](https://docs.prescientai.com/data-center/data-patches).

## How do you prepare the sheet?

1. Make a Google Sheet with the columns of the type of the channel. See [Data requirements](https://docs.prescientai.com/reference/data-center/data-requirements).

In a patch, the key columns are required and the main metric columns are optional. A patch sheet always uses the Google Sheets column names, so the expected name of the date column is `created_date`. Data Center also accepts `date`.

2. Make a named range that covers the rows, with the header row.

3. Share the sheet with Prescient. The left side of the **Data patch** dialog shows the sharing instructions. To read them, open the dialog with the first two steps of the next section.

## How do you add the patch?

1. On the **Channels** tab, select the menu at the end of the row of the channel.

2. Select **Data patch**.

The item is available only for a channel that can take a patch.

3. Paste the address of the sheet in **Patch sheet URL**.

4. Select **Find ranges**, then select the range in **Named range**.

5. Select **Save & Test**.

Data Center runs the same three checks as for a Google Sheets channel. When the checks pass, the dialog shows **Data patch validated** and the row of the channel shows the badge **Patch**.

## How do you read the state of a patch?

Open **Data patch** again to see the sheet, the range, and the result of the last test.

| State | What it means |
| ------------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Patch validated** | The last test passed. The line below gives the count of rows and the date of the test. |
| **Patch failing** | The last test failed. Correct the sheet and select **Re-test**. |
| **Not tested yet** | The patch is saved and has no test result. |

When the last test failed, the row of the channel shows the badge **Patch failing**. Correct the sheet, then select **Re-test**.

## How do you change or remove a patch?

- To use a different sheet or range, open **Data patch**, select **Edit**, change the values, then select **Save & Test**. A change drops the last test result.
- To remove the patch, open **Data patch**, select **Remove patch**, and confirm. Data Center stops the use of the sheet. The sheet itself is not changed.

> **A patch does not replace a connection:** A patch adds to the data of a live connection. If the channel has no connection, connect the channel first.
